If you’re a member of Planet Fitness, you know that there’s a dress code that you need to follow. But what exactly can’t you wear at the gym? We’ve got a list of the most common items that are not allowed so that you can be prepared for your next workout!

Shirts that expose the midriff
It’s no secret that gym attire has gotten more and more casual over the years. And while that’s mostly a good thing — who wants to spend hours getting all dressed up to break a sweat? — it can sometimes lead to some questionable fashion choices. Case in point: midriff-baring shirts at the gym.
Now, we’re not here to judge anyone’s fashion sense. But when it comes to working out, there are certain items of clothing that are just not appropriate — and shirts that expose the midriff are definitely on that list.
For one thing, they’re distracting — both for the person wearing them and for everyone else around them. But more importantly, they’re simply not conducive to a good workout. After all, one of the key things you want in workout clothes is something that will absorb sweat and keep you cool — and bare skin definitely does not fit that bill.
So if you’re heading to the gym, leave the midriff-baring shirts at home and opt for something a little more covered up instead. Your workout — and everyone else’s — will be much better for it.
Clothing that is see-through
Many people are unsure of what the dress code is at Planet Fitness. In general, the rule is that you must wear clothing that is not see-through. This means that you cannot wear items such as tank tops, sports bras, or other revealing clothing. Wearing see-through clothing would be considered disrespectful to other members of the gym and would not be tolerated.
Sleeveless shirts for men
The jury is no longer out on whether or not men can wear sleeveless shirts at Planet Fitness – the answer is a resounding no. While some men may feel that they are comfortable and within the dress code wearing a sleeveless shirt, this is not the case. Wearing a sleeveless shirt at Planet Fitness is a breach of the dress code, and men who do so will be asked to either change their shirt or leave the gym.
There are a few exceptions to the rule – if you are wearing a sleeveless shirt as part of a uniform (such as a police officer or security guard), or if you have a medical condition that prevents you from wearing a shirt with sleeves, then you will be allowed to remain in the gym. However, for the vast majority of men, sleeveless shirts are simply not allowed.
So what should you wear instead? A t-shirt or tank top with sleeves is always acceptable, as long as it is not excessively tight or revealing. If you’re unsure about whether or not your shirt meets these criteria, it’s always best to err on the side of caution and choose something else.
Shorts that are more than 7 inches above the knee
In order to maintain a comfortable and safe environment for all members, we ask that you wear proper workout attire at all times. Please refrain from wearing clothing that is revealing, heavily fragranced, or offensive. Clothing that does not cover the midriff or shorts that are more than 7 inches above the knee are not permitted.
Jeans with holes
In order to maintain a clean and welcoming environment for all of our members, we do not allow clothing with holes. This includes, but is not limited to, jeans with holes, shorts with holes, and shirts with holes.
Exposed undergarments
If you want to wear a thong to the gym, Planet Fitness is probably not the place for you. The company’s dress code prohibits exposed undergarments, and their strict policy has caused some members to be banned from the gym.
Cut-off shirts
Cut-off shirts are not allowed at Planet Fitness. This rule applies to both men and women. Cut-off shirts are any shirts that have been cut or torn so that they no longer reach the waistline. This includes tank tops, cropped shirts, and sleeveless shirts.
Muscle shirts
In order to create a comfortable and welcoming environment for all of our members, we ask that you please refrain from wearing certain items of clothing. Specifically, we ask that you avoid wearing muscle shirts, tank tops, halter tops, revealing apparel, or any other type of clothing that may be deemed inappropriate or disruptive.
Excessive sweatpants
Excessive sweatpants are not allowed at Planet Fitness. This includes any type of excessively baggy or loose pants, as well as any type of pants that are excessively sweaty.
Exposed cleavage for women
While there are no specific dress code requirements at Planet Fitness, certain items of clothing are not allowed. For example, women are not allowed to wear clothing that exposes their cleavage. This includes Tank tops, halter tops, crop tops, and shirts with low necklines.
